Later, much later, I realized that it was the advertising industry in Trinidad that perpetrated this self-serving myth. Unfortunately, local advertisers are still being fed other false ideas about how advertising works. Today these myths are so ingrained that they are accepted as common knowledge. The truth though is that… Advertising is a multi-million dollar industry in Trinidad and Tobago. Here are the facts:
oAdvertising revenue from all the various media in Trinidad and Tobago is over $400,000,000 annually.
oAdvertising agencies in Trinidad place a very low priority on testing ads, measuring reach or keeping any relevant advertising data. Use of focus groups do not (commonly used to justify advertising investment)employ strogent proven target audience criteria.
oThe agencies and the media outlets are more focused on winning “creative advertising awards” than generating sales. The attitude is that if it's creative and generate responses it's can win awards that entitle the company to bragging rights.
A few advertisers reading this will say: “When I advertise I get lots of calls, the advertising pays for itself?”
The answer to that question is a question: “It does not take one cent more to generate more responses, calls or sales; why not maximize the performace of the ad?”.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
My name is Tony Puckerin, an Independent Marketing Consultant operating a home based business from St. Joseph, Trinidad. Guerilla Marketing Consulting Limited was established 2 years ago with the primary purpose of assisting small to medium sized businesses to market their products and services. Why Am I Focusing On Advertising?
It was only recently while involved in a copy writing assignment that I began to understand the advertising industry in Trinidad. My assignments afforded me the opportunity to meet with a few of the country's larger advertising agency executives.
A few questions to these executives, made me realize that the average advertiser (the person who drives the industry) was totally unschooled in advertising and through no fault of the agencies, this lack of basic understanding have been costing local advertiser millions in wasted advertisements.
